Our Egypt trip: the balloon ride

In Luxor we saw a bunch of temples (the temple of Hatcheput...!, the guide kept on calling her 'chicken-soup') and the Valley of the Kings, a valley where all the pharaos got buried but nobody knew of this place. Very ingeniously hidden, no traces). No cameras allowed though.

We also got the opportunity to go see the area from a balloon.

The flame creates hot air and then the balloon goes up. There was about 12 people in it plus the operator. We could see the Nile area, all green, very much delineated and then next to it the desert area. We saw the temples from up above and the valley of the kings that we had seen the day before.

When landing we came down in the middle of a field. There is no ways to give direction to a balloon. It just goes with the wind. It can spin around its axis and go up and down by manipulating the hot air. People who lived around there came running from all over, children, peasants, all looking for hand-outs, like everywhere else. If they see you take their picture, they pose and then stick their hand out. It was a lot of excitement for them though. The truck from the balloon company that had been following us was right there, a bunch of guys jumped out and had the thing all folded up very quickly.

Cool.
