Kenya safari: the Maasai people

We visited several Maasai villages. The Maasai showed us their traditional dances while singing their beautiful songs. They showed us how to make a fire with just wooden sticks, told us about traditional medicines and showed us their crafts. They are a very warm and friendly people.

The men dance their 'jumping' dance in which they jump straight up in the air. They really come off the ground. We didn't do very well compared to them. The ones jumping the highest get the most girlfriends or wives.

They are dressed in very bright colors. Reasons for this is that on the plains they can be spotted easily, and it also protects them from the wildlife.

On the picture above you can see some men walking in the distance. Below is a Maasai warrior employed at one of the lodges on the landing of the lodge where the tourists can spot wildlife. They guard the premises against intrusions of animals, mostly monkeys, but also hyenas and more dangerous predators.
