People

All of the top pictures were taken in Socotra, an island in the Arabian Sea belonging to Yemen (more pictures next post). On the left: our driver(left) and a goat herder(right). The goat herder had red hair, he said he used henna for his hair.  The picture on the right shows little girls who had painted flowers on their hands (henna too).
Next, some boys in the streets, a shopkeeper, a young girl, and a young man.

The pictures on the bottom show people in Sanaa,Yemen. One man resting in his wheelbarrow, a woman tending her goats (she lets them go through the garbage piles on the street), next some guys sleeping inside the shovel of a construction machine, a baker (hot job), a man riding his horse beside the road, and construction workers clinging to their equipment on the back of a pick up truck, going home after a day's work.

  1. Beautiful people! It must be fascinating to mingle with them. I bet you loved the flower painting on the girls' hands, Marian. And Marc, what were you communicating to those boys? They look like they were having a good time.

  2. I was playing 'take a picture' game. Mostly the people here don't want to be photographed. The two little girls didn't want to right away (their parents have probably told them not to), but then they talked to each other and showed their hands! Then I showed it to them on the digital camera. They were excited.
Women can have their hands painted here with henna, really beautiful intricate patterns, it's hard to get pictures of that.
I photographed one woman from the car, passing by, she was quite a ways away, but saw me, and tried to cover up even more, even though she was wearing an abaya and head cover. The driver, a very friendly guy, shook his finger and said, no no, no pictures of women. So I'll have to be really creative to get a picture of a painted hand.
